Read the first chapter of Leading Strategic Shifts
Every organization will face a strategic shift. Success comes down to its leaders. Start here.
Every strategic shift becomes a leadership shift. In Chapter 1, “Strategic Shifts Are Leadership Shifts,” New York Times bestselling author Dr. Vince Molinaro covers three things: what makes a strategic shift different from routine change, the eight types of shifts organizations face, and what each one demands of you as a leader.

“They don’t have a clue what’s coming.”
I was facilitating a strategic offsite for a fintech company. The board had replaced the entire executive team. The new leaders were seasoned and confident, and they’d won before.
As they talked, I noticed that confidence tip into something else. They had plenty to say about strategy and execution. They had nothing to say about what the shift would demand of them as leaders.
When I raised it, the room got tense. Then, one by one, they admitted their doubts.
That moment is where Chapter 1 begins. Most leadership teams underestimate what a strategic shift will require of them. The strategy is usually fine. The leaders haven’t changed.
What you’ll get in Chapter 1
What makes a strategic shift different
It’s bigger than change, transformation or a turnaround, and the stakes are higher. Learn why a shift tests leaders more than any other transition.
The eight types of strategic shifts
Four externally driven, four internally driven. Find out which one you’re in, and what happens when they collide in a shift within a shift.
What the shift changes for you
Your mindset, your behaviors and how you work with other leaders. You’ll see where each one breaks down first.
The Gut Check for Leaders
Four questions to test whether you’re ready. Here’s one: If your leadership team were placed under sustained pressure tomorrow, would you operate as one enterprise or retreat into silos?
“Strategic shifts fail when they’re treated as operational. They succeed when leaders treat them as personal.”
Strategic shifts are no longer the exception
When Vince ran a Google Trends analysis, he found that search interest in “strategic shift” rose by more than 140% from 2020 to 2025. It spiked during the pandemic, surged again with AI, and never came back down. For most organizations, a strategic shift is now the normal operating condition. Many are dealing with more than one at once.
